Again in 2020 the big winners with China’s Wine List of the Year Awards are greater China’s Hospitality and Tourism Industries and greater China’s ever more discerning Consumers everywhere who benefit from the significant gains that are being achieved each year with the standard of greater China’s wine lists.

Every year the standard of the wine lists that showcase these industries – and are available to those consumers, continues to rise with the highest percentage (%) ever of 3 Glass Wine Lists across China ever!

This outstanding result further demonstrates the growing standard of greater China’s best Wine Lists today.

In 2020 the most popular categories entered by applicants were again Best Wine by the Glass List followed again also by Best Food and Wine Matching Wine List. For the first time this year the Best Listing of Chinese Wines was the next most strongly supported category which is a great trend for China’s growing DomesticWine Industry!

2020 was also another record year for the Independent Restaurant sector across Greater China reflecting the increased focus by this category on creating outstanding wine offers for their customers and wanting to say so!

Finally, it is very encouraging to hear of the positive impact on respective businesses that success in the Awards is bringing to those deserving of recognition and reward for the outstanding levels they are achieving.

Quote from Co-Chairman of Judges Peter Forrestal on the 2020 Awards …”As always, the 2020 China’s Wine List of the Year charts the evolution of the hospitality industry in this country by documenting the work of the increasing numbers of trained sommeliers employed in the country’s finest hotels and best restaurants. It highlights best practice and helps spread an understanding of industry trends. More and more restaurants are showing their personality in the lists they present. Increasingly, the cuisine of the restaurant is mirrored in the wines that are offered to diners. Innovations such as Coravin have made a huge difference to the quality of by the glass lists and this has made a greater range of wines available to restaurant customers. The emergence of the Chinese wine industry is increasingly reflected in the availability of local wines on the best lists. There is great excitement obvious in the fun that many sommeliers have in offering cocktails and an exhilarating range of spirits in China’s bars and restaurants”.

Quote from Co-Chairman of Judges Brian Julyan MS on the 2020 Awards …” Each year the six finalists are outstanding examples of the art of compiling a wine list and this year is no exception.  They have demonstrated the considerable thought and care which is now employed to producing wine lists in China, Hong Kong and Macau and this has now become the norm.  The competition is becoming ever closer and if it continues in the same manner the end result will be a number of lists equal first.  It is becoming that close.  The development of WBG programmes has developed hugely giving the customer not only the opportunity to choose wines to suit individual dishes, which is not only highly appropriate for Asian cuisine, but also providing the opportunity to sample the enormous potential of Chinese wines, which all lists should now include.  Over the years the wine lists have evolved significantly to meet the changes in menus and the needs of the consumer.

CHINA’S WINE LISTS OF THE YEAR – 2020

Mainland China

ENSUE, Shenzhen

“In the eight-year history of these awards, no list has dominated the voting for Mainland China as completely as Ensue has done this year. Complementing the food of outstanding Californian chef, Christopher Kostow, and its farm-to-table culture, Della Tang and Laurent Chevalier present a list that makes accessible many of the world’s finest wines. Its 37 wines by the glass, mostly under Coravin, include iconic wines from France, the Napa Valley, Italy, Spain and Germany. Arguably, it’s the world’s best list by the glass. The rest of the wine list is strongest in Burgundy and the Napa and yet circles the globe choosing outstanding wines from many great regions. There’s the expected and the surprising: Clos Sainte Hune to Qupé; Araujo Estate to Tom Shobbrook. There’s an interest in organic and biodynamic farming and the wines of China. A dazzling list.

Peter Forrestal, Co-Chairman of Judges”

Hong Kong – Macau – Taiwan

8½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana, Macau

“Since it opened in 2015, this restaurant’s wine list has been highly regarded. What has happened in the past year has been transformative and it now enters a new dimension as one of China’s most outstanding lists. The offering by the glass illustrate what has changed. While the numbers have only marginally increased, the quality has soared. A prestige champagne has been added. The substantial increased use of Coravin has been accompanied by a dramatic improvement in the quality of the Italian wines on show. Much of the credit must go to Han Yew Kong and the team: it’s not just that they have had the opportunity of adding 500 wines to the list. It’s what they have done to enhance its quality.  8½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana in Macau now has an Italian list which matches the quality of its cuisine as well as listings of the most important French regions that enable it to strut with China’s finest.  Peter Forrestal, Co-Chairman of Judges.
