Again in 2021 the big winners with China’s Wine List of the Year Awards are China’s Hospitality and Tourism Industries and also China’s ever more discerning Consumers everywhere who benefit from the significant gains that are being achieved each year with the standard of China’s wine lists.

Every year the standard of the wine lists that showcase these industries – and are available to those consumers, continues to grow with the highest percentage (%) ever of 3 Glass Wine Lists across China achieved in 2021!

This outstanding result further demonstrates the growing standard of China’s best Wine Lists today.  In 2021 the most popular categories entered by applicants were again Best Wine by the Glass List followed again also by Best Food and Wine Matching Wine List then, Best Champagne List. Following last year’s trend, this year the Best Listing of Chinese Wines was the next most strongly supported category – great news for China’s growing Domestic Wine Industry!

2021 was again another record year for the Independent Restaurant sector – up an extraordinary 33% on last year, across China reflecting the increased focus by this category on creating outstanding wine offers for their customers and wanting to say so!

Finally, it is very encouraging to hear of the positive impact on respective businesses that success in the Awards is bringing to those deserving of recognition and reward for the outstanding levels they are achieving.

Quote from Co-Chairman of Judges Peter Forrestal on the 2021 China’s Wine List of the Year Awards: …There hasn’t been a year when the quality of China’s wine lists was so strong. It seems that, in 2021, instead of increasing the size of their lists, sommeliers are looking to improving the quality of the wines they offer their customers. The best restaurants (both those which are in hotels and are stand-alone) are offering more extensive lists by the glass that are thoughtfully selected to be in tune with the restaurant’s theme or cuisine and offer patrons unforgettable experiences. Coravin is a vital part of this revolution.

Competition for the top awards have never been stronger: nor has the support among judges for all those chosen as finalists. The quality of the lists in a significant number of restaurants suggests that the expertise of sommeliers working in Chinese restaurants continues to be on the rise. This also suggests that the influence of the leading sommeliers in the country is spreading rapidly and helping to improve the restaurant experience for many patrons. Peter Forrestal, Co-Chairman of Judges

Quote from Co-Chairman of Judges Brian Julyan MS – Founder of the Court of Master Sommeliers, on the 2021 Awards…” Congratulations to all the entrants and especially the finalists for another year of outstanding entries.  With Restaurants suffering reduced business through the pandemic one might have expected lists to be reduced in range and diversity, but this was not the case.  The attention to detail and the quality of content was as good as any previous year.

The array of WBG, aided by the excellent dispensing systems now available, has allowed considerable expansion of this section, providing Sommeliers the chance to offer exciting food and wine pairings course by course and customers an enhanced opportunity to enjoy a wider range of wines. Brian Julyan MS Master Sommelier, Co-Chairman of Judges.

On behalf of the Tourism and Hospitality Industries across China and discerning consumers everywhere our sincere thanks to our Partners, Supporters and Sponsors below whom have made these 2021 Awards possible;

CHINA’S WINNING WINE LISTS – 2021

Mainland China

1515 West Chophouse, Shanghai

This is a carefully curated wine list that gives voice to a fantastic array of wines by the glass – it takes the category very seriously and uses it in the way it was intended, especially through Coravin – and presents a fine dining wine experience of the world’s wines. Big names tend to dominate but there is admirable choice when you delve a little deeper. It is worth remembering that it is part of the Shangri-La chain with access to an amazing master list. It uses it well. Deputy Chair, Jeni Port.

 In the end, 1515 West Chophouse won me over for its ability to satisfy wine lovers at all budgets. Yes it has an incredible range of top end wines, but also an excellent number at the more modest end of the market.  It was an impressive international list, including a top selection of wines from China. Deputy Chair, Toni Paterson MW.
