***************
Again in 2022 the big winners with China’s Wine List of the Year Awards are China’s Hospitality and Tourism Industries and also China’s ever more discerning Consumers everywhere who benefit from the significant gains that are being achieved each year with the standard of China’s wine lists.
Every year the standard of the wine lists that showcase these industries – and are available to those consumers, continues to grow with the highest percentage ever of 2 and 3 Glass Wine Lists across China achieved in 2022 – quantity and quality!
This outstanding result further demonstrates the growing standard of China’s best Wine Lists today. In 2022 the most popular category entered by applicants was Best Food and Wine Matching Wine List followed this year by Best Wine by the Glass List then, Best Champagne List. This year the Best Listing of French Wines was the next most supported category followed by the Best Listing of Chinese Wines – again great news for China’s growing Domestic Wine Industry!
Interestingly also, 2022 was again another record year for the Independent Restaurant sector – up again 8% on last year, and now, for the first time representing over 50% of the Awards entries across China reflecting the increased focus by this category on creating outstanding wine offers for their customers and wanting to let their customers know that they are!
Finally, it is very encouraging to hear of the positive impact on respective businesses that success in the Awards is bringing to those deserving of recognition and reward – especially given the outstanding levels they are achieving.
Quote from Co-Chairman of Judges Peter Forrestal, on the 2022 China’s Wine List of the Year Awards: … ‘When considering the difficulties those involved in the hospitality industry have overcome in China this year, especially with the pandemic and lockdowns, it’s hard to believe, firstly, their resilience, and secondly, what they have been able to achieve. The improvements we noted last year continue. There are tighter, more carefully chosen lists by the glass and the game-changing use of the Coravin wine preservation system to increase the size and quality of what sommeliers can offer their customers. One of the great strengths of the Chinese hospitality industry has long been how well chefs and sommeliers can combine their talents to offer food and wine that are blissfully complementary. The best restaurants have taken that to another level.
There are two changes that have delighted the judges. Firstly, the increasing numbers of table wines from China that are featured on the best lists. For many years, we judges have been watching the giant strides made in the quality of Chinese wines and are delighted to see sommeliers and the public embrace these classy local whites, reds and bubblies through these wine lists. We have also noted the increasing strength of Beijing’s wine lists as they are reflected in the results of this year’s China’s Wine List of the Year.
Once again, these awards document the very best of what is happening in the kitchens and on the restaurant floors of the nation’s finest hospitality venues.’
Quote from Co-Chairman of Judges Brian Julyan MS – Founder of the Court of Master Sommeliers, on the 2022 China’s Wine List of the Year Awards …Every finalist should be proud of maintaining such high quality lists under the most testing market conditions. Continuing on from last year’s trend, the Wine by the Glass options have been further expanded encouraging customers to experiment with their selections and for Sommeliers to have the opportunity to recommend appropriate wines for each individual dish. The widening range of wines on offer reflects the increasing knowledge and professionalism of Sommeliers and the inclusion of a larger number of Chinese wines confirms the growing understanding and appreciation of the quality and styles available at the various price levels. Their inclusion complements the Traditional big names and vintages resulting in a greater balance and widening the experiences available to consumers.

Jing Yaa Tang – Beijing
Jing Yaa Tang
A stunning wine list by Rill Ma with many highlights that perfectly complements the cuisine. Firstly, it is hard to go past the “Duck & Wine Pairing”, where Champagne, textural whites and vibrant reds have been selected for the affinity with Beijing Roast Duck. There’s also the well-chosen selection by the glass, with helpful descriptions, including premium wines served using the Coravin system. Commendation must also go to the stunning selection of Chinese regional wines. The main list presents a sweep of international wines, with a focus on European wines, where vintage and producer have been carefully considered. Deputy Chair of Judges, Toni Paterson MW.
Hong Kong – Macau – Taiwan
The Manor – Cotai
The Manor
David Duan’s carefully chosen and immaculately presented list at ‘The Manor’ offers a tour of the great wine regions of the world. The compact list offers introductions to the best wines of the finest producers as well as outstanding examples of more modestly priced wines from these regions. It’s an extensive list by the glass, wide-ranging yet tightly focused on impressive quality and fair value. The choice of champagnes covers all the significant Grand Marque producers and all the important styles of bubbly. There’s a decent range of wines from China which will serve as a useful introduction to visitors to the country. Those looking for a lift towards the end of the meal will find the choice of cocktails and spirits has plenty to tempt them. Again, it’s the quality of the list rather than its size that delights. Co-Chairman of Judges, Peter Forrestal
