***************

2023 saw another record year for the Awards and the big winners with China’s Wine List of the Year Awards are China’s Hospitality and Tourism Industries and the nations ever more discerning consumers everywhere who benefit from the significant gains that are being achieved each year with the standard of China’s wine lists.

Each year the standard of the wine lists that showcase these industries, and are available to those consumers, continues to grow with the highest percentage ever of 2 and 3 Glass Wine Lists across China achieved in 2023. This represents exciting growth for the Industry in China, both in quantity and quality.

This outstanding result further demonstrates the growing standard of China’s best Wine Lists today.

2023, also saw more records broken, with the highest number of Glass winning venues ever from Eastern China, Western China and Macau. In addition, 2023 saw the highest number ever of independent restaurants entering the Awards (up 25%) accompanied by the highest number ever of new entrants ever, overall (up 14%) – a strong pointer to a growing level of confidence in China’s Hospitality and Tourism Industries generally.

With categories entered, the most popular category entered in 2023 is, for the first time, China’s Best Listing of French Wines followed by China’s Best Listing of Chinese Wines – with this category  also achieving a record year. This is wonderful news for China’s growing domestic wine industry.

The next most popular category was China’s Best Food and Wine Matching Wine List followed this year by China’s Best Wine by the Glass List and then, China’s Best Champagne List.

Finally, it is very encouraging to hear of the positive impact on respective businesses that success in the Awards is bringing to the Awards Glass winners, those venues and sommeliers deserving of recognition and reward; especially given the outstanding levels they are achieving.

Quote from Co-Chairman of Judges Peter Forrestal, on the 2023 China’s Wine List of the Year AwardsNow in its eleventh year, China’s Wine List of the Year celebrates with a record number of entries and quality continuing to soar. Many previous winners are still involved giving quality to the Hall of Fame and snapping up some of the highly treasured awards for individual categories. Notables include Hakkasan, Ensue, Café Grey Deluxe and 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana, Shanghai.

Mainland China’s winner was Frasca from the Middle House, a strong international list with an Italian accent, outstanding by the glass and wonderful on spirits and cocktails. Outstanding for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan was the MGM Cotai’s Grill 58: an imposing list with impressive champagnes and reds by the glass and an outstanding celebration of older vintages to delight heavy hitters.

The influence of world-class sommeliers has seen the immaculate presentation of so many wine lists which have been thoughtfully curated. The Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Cotai has suggested new directions for hotel lists with its 1500 wine cellar and a wine by the glass preservation system that enables 40 offerings by the glass!”

Quote from Co-Chairman of Judges Brian Julyan MS – Founder of the Court of Master Sommeliers, on the 2023 China’s Wine List of the Year Awards … This year’s entries have demonstrated the quality and diversity of the cuisines available in the Chinese market.  The wine lists have continued to expand and improve in excellence and this year’s entries are very good examples, including a greater range of options for the customer. Tasting menus, which include accompanying wines, have been adopted by an increased number of entries. They demonstrate the considerable research and co-operation which has been carried between the kitchen and restaurant teams, producing knowledgeable and interesting selections.  The Coravin options for Wines by the Glass are continuing to increase and are providing customers with the opportunity to sample wines which they might not otherwise have chosen.  Chinese wines are continuing to be recognised for quality and these will benefit from these Wine by the Glass programmes, not only for the home market but especially where tourists are catered for.

CHINA’S WINNING WINE LISTS – 2023

Mainland China

Frasca – Shanghai

Frasca

Mainland China’s winner was Frasca from the Middle House, a strong international list with an Italian accent, outstanding by the glass and wonderful on spirits and cocktails. The focus here is very much Italian and there are some superb examples and superstars in the Aged Cellar section. Along with this solid selection of Italians, there is a fine offering of both champagnes and Burgundies. Plenty of mature wines as well. An excellent supporting cast! Chairman of Judges, Peter Forrestal

Hong Kong – Macau – Taiwan

Grill 58 – Macau

Grill 58

An elite list which offers an array of fine champagnes by the glass, in addition to the high-quality of all other selections. By the glass would more than satisfy many wine lovers. Some thrilling bottles here for those with deep pockets – aged DRC and Coche Dury for examples – but plenty of more approachable options as well. Amazing Bordeaux and so many stunning options from around the globe. A collection of Henri Bonneau. A list to cherish. Chairman of Judges, Peter Forrestal
