2024 saw another record year for the Awards and the big winners with China’s Wine List of the Year Awards are China’s Hospitality and Tourism Industries and the nations ever more discerning consumers everywhere who benefit from the significant gains that are being achieved each year with the standard of China’s wine lists.

Each year the standard of the wine lists that showcase these industries, and are available to those consumers, continues to grow with the highest percentage ever of 2 and 3 Glass Wine Lists across China achieved in 2024. This represents exciting growth for the Industry in China, both in quantity and quality.

This outstanding result further demonstrates the growing standard of China’s best Wine Lists today.

2024, also saw more records broken, with the highest number of Glass winning venues ever from Southern China and Macau. In addition, 2024 saw the record of independent restaurants achieved last year entering the Awards being maintained together with the record number of new entrants achieved last year – a strong pointer to a growing level of confidence in China’s Hospitality and Tourism Industries generally.

With categories entered, the most popular category entered in 2024 is, for the first time, China’s Best Food and Wine Matching Wine List followed by China’s Best Wine by the Glass List. China’s Best Listing of Chinese Wines also achieved another a record year – wonderful news for China’s growing domestic wine industry.

Finally, it is very encouraging to hear of the positive impact on respective businesses that success in the Awards is bringing to the Awards Glass winners, those venues and sommeliers deserving of recognition and reward; especially given the outstanding levels they are achieving.

Quote from Co-Chairman of Judges Peter Forrestal, on the 2024 China’s Wine List of the Year Awards – “The value of Awards such as China’s Wine List of the Year is in the spotlight that it shines on the whole range of restaurants that make up China’s buoyant hospitality industry. While the focus is on the wine lists themselves, these provide a commentary on what those involved in serving the public consider to be of value. So while the Awards celebrate another record number of entries, the organisers are delighted to see more detailed lists by the glass and the impact that wine preservation kits are having on making this possible. It is particularly pleasing to see the great wine lists of the large hotels distinguish between each other by the quality of their lists by the glass. Also pleasing to see is the increase in the number and quality of wines made in China and proudly presented alongside the finest wines from long-established wine-producing countries. Once again, previous winners of these awards are, not only represented in the Hall of Fame, but add quality by taking home some of the most sought-after individual awards. Hence, Ensue, Rooseveldt Club, Frasca,  8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana, Shanghai and Grill 58 continue to show their quality.

Xin Rong Ji (Xinyuan South Road) was a worthy winner of Mainland China’s top award while the battle for the best list in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan was won by SOMM by a single vote over Palace Garden. So three great lists are separated by a hair’s breadth. And the winner is the dining public”.

CHINA’S WINNING WINE LISTS – 2024

Mainland China

Xin Rong Ji (Xinyuan South Road) – Beijing

Xin Rong Ji (Xinyuan South Road)

Mainland China’s winner was Xin Rong Ji (Xinyuan South Road) – “The great wines of France are well represented at Xin Rong Ji, with plenty of exploration on offer across Champagne and Burgundy in particular. Still, there are other highlights here, including two pages of Chinese wines, complete with a map and notes on the nation’s key burgeoning wine regions. Set tasting flights complement the extensive menu, as do the half-bottles, magnums and even a couple of jeroboams. A tight selection of wines from other European nations and the new world fill in the blanks nicely, with plenty of baiju and huangjiu to finish”.

Hong Kong – Macau – Taiwan

SOMM – Hong Kong

SOMM

The Major Award winner from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan is – SOMM – “The ‘by the glass’ list sets the scene for this astonishing wine list. The carefully curated offering by the taste, glass and carafe is a joy to peruse before diving deep into the core of the list. The multiple selections listed by producer adds appeal as does the depth of the Champagne, Burgundy and Bordeaux on offer. That’s not say the rest of France is ignored, nay its celebrated as are other European producers, those of the new world of wine and China. The Sake list adds gravitas as does the dessert and fortified wine selection. This is a stellar wine list”.
