Napa Wine Bar & Kitchen
As custodian of this winning list, the Award for
China’s ‘Outstanding Sommelier’ 2014 – Mainland China, goes to Edward Kok Seng Lee
”Shanghai and the Bund has never seen a wine bar quite like Napa. Taste exquisite wine from China or most parts of the world by the glass: or try five First Growths and Yquem. A scintillating list with great depth and breadth, and importantly, something for everyone.” Co-Chairman Peter Forrestal
* China’s Wine List of the Year 2014 – Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan
L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon
As custodians of this winning list, the Award for
China’s ‘Outstanding Sommelier’ 2014 – Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan goes to
Terence Wong and Eric Yau
”Robuchon’s outstanding L’Atelier boasts a simply splendid treasure trove of the finest French wines; top vintages of the best Burgundies, Bordeaux, Rhones and Champagnes as well as classy wines from around the world to suit all budgets. A dazzling list by the glass, too.” Co-Chairman Peter Forrestal
With more than a doubling of Glass winners in this, only the second year of China’s Wine List of the Year Awards, the final Award Winners reads like a Who’s Who of fine ‘wining and dining’ across Greater China, with 37 Awards presented to lists large and small, from small independent restaurants through to clubs, wine bars, and representation from virtually all of China’s major International Hotel and Resort Groups.
Quote from 2014 Co-Chairman Peter Forrestal ………………………………..
“As we have moved into the second year’s judging of China’s Wine List of the Year, the progress made has been the source of much delight. With many lists, it is clear that sommeliers have learnt a great deal and gained confidence from the experience of being involved in the Awards. Standards of presentation have risen, more emphasis is being placed on lists by the glass, and sommeliers are showing more national pride by celebrating China’s own, increasingly impressive wines.
There is no question that the best wine lists of China deserve to be ranked among the world’s finest. These Awards show them to the world in all their splendour.”
Quote from 2014 Co-Chairman Tommy Lam ………………………………..
“With a more than doubling of Glass Award winners, in this only the second year of these Awards, it is wonderful to see the industry capitalising on the opportunity these awards present. More quality lists have been submitted this year and their recognition, with these Awards, for the excellent job they are doing is great to see. Congratulations to the winners and very best wishes to all the entrants.”

CHINA’S WINE LIST OF THE YEAR – 2014
Mainland China: Napa Wine Bar & Kitchen – Shanghai
Now housed on the second storey of a gracious old building at Bund 22, Napa places the focus clearly on wine: with Chef Patrick Dang’s dishes encouraging you to go in search of the perfect match among the pages of this vast list. Inspite of its size, the list is easy to navigate as you take a trip through the sparkling, white or red wines from around the world. Enjoy a white or red from China’s Grace Vineyard or select from more than 30 choices in the exemplary By the Glass range. France is the superstar but Spain, Italy, Australia, Chile and the United States are well represented.
Start with a Non-Vintage Champagne from a cutting-edge producer like Egly-Ouriet or choose a mellow, aged bubbly from the 1990s from a traditional house like Salon. With the whites, you can choose one of the great wines of the world like Trimbach’s Clos Sainte Hune or a Montrachet from Jacques Prieur, or a modestly-priced Falenghia from Feudi di San Gregorio in Campania or a Gaia Assyrtiko from Santorini. There’s the same breadth with the reds but even greater depth among the world’s finest. If you’re splurging at Napa, swish it all down with a glass of the world’s finest sticky, Chateau d’Yquem.
Hong Kong – Macau – Taiwan: L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon – Hong Kong
This elegant French restaurant is situated in the Landmark complex in Hong Kong with its cellar part of the magnificent collection assembled by the Grand Lisboa group in Macau. It has a vast list of more than 3,000 wines and multiple vintages of many of the world’s greatest: Dom Perignon, DRC Le Montrachet, Armand Rousseau Chambertin, DRC La Tâche and Romanée-Conti, the Bordeaux First Growths and Le Pin, the single vineyard Cote Roties of Guigal, Caymus, Colgin and Screaming Eagle from California, Penfolds Grange, and ‘Yquem back to 1921. Unquestionably, it’s a playground for millionaires and wine fanatics.
The list does, however, offer plenty for us mere mortals seeking a dining experience to remember. Although this is a mammoth collection of wine, the list is easy to navigate. The selection by the glass, while not extensive, is admirable: fastidiously chosen so the quality is palpable, offering youthful and mature wines from around the globe. Although the focus is on high-end wines, the list does cover countries like Spain, Portugal, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Argentina which offer wines at a range of prices.
Expect a memorable experience from the combination of Joel Robuchon’s magnificent French dishes and the superbly-curated wine cellar at L’Atelier.
